TBW Books is pleased to present A Sudden Gust of Wind (after Hokusai) by artist Jeff Wall. The original, a lightbox transparency residing in the permanent collection at Tate, is not simply a photograph, and in a similar way, TBW Books’ scale reproduction is not simply a book. Nearly a decade in the making, this collaboration between the artist and publisher responds to the challenge of how Wall’s work, characterized by its synthesis of materiality and scale, could be rendered uniquely into book form, the result being an art object to be held in hand and eventually displayed in one’s own space.
The book A Sudden Gust of Wind (after Hokusai) is exquisitely printed on 98 deconstructed panels that, when hung according to the publisher’s instructions, flutter with a gentle source of airflow, creating an animated reinterpretation of the original piece. With tremendous attention to design detail and quality of materials – from the crafted folder that thoughtfully houses each panel, mimicking the one in Wall’s original image, to the foil-stamped clamshell signed and numbered by the artist – this edition of 300 copies is a conceptual achievement guided by the highest standards of bookmaking.
